Paul H. Karsten
Paul Karsten is the Vice President of Finance/Chief Financial Officer for Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. He has served in this position since 1996. During his tenure, he has overseen dramatic growth both in the size and scope of behavioral health services as net revenue has grown eight times over. He is responsible for all financial operations and performance including functions such as treasury management (including the investment of endowment assets), revenue cycle performance, budgeting, financial audit, and contracting. He has extensive experience driving financial performance in a little-understood niche of health care.
Paul holds degrees from Calvin College and the University of Chicago. He has served in leadership positions in a variety of governmental and nonprofit settings in Chicago, Illinois; Pasadena, California; and Grand Rapids, Michigan. In Chicago, he worked for the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District. In Pasadena, he was the Director of Finance for the City of Pasadena and was also a proud member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.
In Michigan, he has served on several community boards, including the Michigan Professional Insurance Exchange, and currently is the board treasurer for Care Resources, a west Michigan-based nonprofit that sponsors a PACE (Program for the All-inclusive Care of the Elderly) for senior citizens. In addition, he serves on the Board of the Service Corporation of the Michigan Hospital Association. Active in his local church, he has held a variety of leadership positions at Westminster Presbyterian Church as well as Camp Henry and is the current Moderator of the Leadership Team for the Presbytery of Lake Michigan. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
